Morning Session

On the morning of Wednesday 27th July, fourteen of the SM National squad arrived early at Ponds Forge Swimming pool ready to compete in heats covering five different events. Stockport Metro’s competitors were:

Emma Rowson (100BK), Katelyn Bergin (100BK), Hannah Jones (100BK), Anna Newlands (100BK, 50FLY), Harry Lewis-Mitchell (200FLY), Katie Matts (200BR), Rebecca Pearson (50FLY), Ciara Standing (50FLY), Emma Gage (50FLY), Megan Sheard (800FR), Kiera Henley (800FR), Elizabeth Harris (800FR) and Holly Hibbott (800FR).

First event of the morning’s heats was Girls 100 back. In a very competitive field our girls achieved times on or around their entry times, Emma Rowson 1:06.12,Katelyn Bergin 1:04.89, Hannah Jones 1:05.77 and Anna Newlands 1:03.69. Katelyn qualified for the 14/15 years final as 4th fastest while Anna is 2nd fastest into tonight’s final, good luck girls. Harry Lewis Mitchell was next up as our only competitor in the Boys 200 fly, a solid swim saw Harry record a time of 2:08.21, a second outside his PB. Katie Matts flying the flag for the Wolf Pack was next on the blocks in the Girls 200 breaststroke. Against and entry time of 2:28.54 Katie breezed into the final as fastest qualifier posting a time of 2:29.88 some 3 seconds ahead of the field. Next to compete was the quartet of 50m flyers, fast and furious heats saw Rebecca Pearson smash her PB and record a SM age group record with a time of 28.79,this swim puts her 4th fastest into tonight’s final. Anna Newlands also records a big PB and qualifies 6th into the final tonight with a time of 28.15. Not far behind Anna and again with a PB was Ciara Standing, her time of 28.32 gets her a lane in tonight’s final .The final heat swim saw Emma Gage in a powerful swim touching first in a time of 27.55, knocking 0.3 of her previous best time. That swim puts Emma 2nd fastest into tonight’s finals. All 4 of the flyers therefore into tonight’s finals, all recording PB’s..well done girls and good luck tonight. Back to a more sedate pace and the heats of the girls 800m free. First up was Megan Sheard who finished outside her entry time at 9:19.09 this gave her a very creditable overall position 10th in the 15years age group . Just ahead of Megan in the same age category was Keira Henley who finished 9th overall in a time of 9:16.23…well done. Elizabeth Harris finished strongly to touch equal 4th overall in the girls 16 years age group. Her time was 9:09.55 just outside her entry time. Holly Hibbott goes tonight in the ‘last’ heat of the 800m, in lane 4 Holly is the fastest qualifier so hopeful to make the podium. So the morning session comes to an end,,,another successful session for SM…lots of pb’s and several finals to look forward to tonight. Good luck to all those who have got a lane tonight. Finals night, day 2 began with a dominant performance from Holly Hibbott in the 800 free ‘last heat. Holly was in control from start to finish and took the gold medal in a time of 8:40.05, 2 seconds quicker than her entry time.
Katelyn Bergin in the 100 back final for 15 years age group lead the field after a strong first 50 m. katelyn touched in a time of 1:04.27, an new SM 14 year old record, to finish 9th overall ,0.15 secs off a bronze medal.
Anna Newlands was touched out of 3rd place in the 17/18 years age group 100 back final, in a time which was quicker than the morning heat and a second PB of the day, Anna touched at 1:03.16 to finish a creditable 4th.
Katie Matts went into the final as fastest qualifier and didn’t disappoint. Katie led the field going out in a 1:10, the strong swim was maintained and Katie touched 3 seconds ahead of the field in a New club open record of 2:26.07 .
Rebecca Pearson fresh from the mornings heat, went even faster in the final and touched in 28.61 a new SM 13 year old record. Rebecca finished in 5th place overall, excellent swim.
Anna Newlands and Ciara Standing went up against each other in the 17/18 Final. Both girls improved on their Heat swims this morning with Ciara going into the final ranked 9th to finish joint 4th. Just outside the podium, in a time of 27.96. Anna touched at 28.25 to finish 9th.
Emma Gage closed the Finals night for SM by claiming a silver medal in the 19 years and over. Emma was touched into 2nd place in a time of 27.61 slightly outside her heat time.
